Dec 18, Colombo: The Movement for Equal Rights in Sri Lanka has urged the government to immediately release the Jaffna University students who are currently in the custody of the Terrorist Investigations Department (TID).
The Movement held a protest outside the Fort Railway Station this evening. Students from universities island wide took part in the protest.
The protestors demanded the government to release the students from the Jaffna University, withdraw the army settlements in the North and East, and grant equal rights for all Sri Lankans.
Seven out of the 11 students taken in to custody last month have been released and the remaining four students are yet in the custody of the TID.
The students have been arrested on charges of supporting terrorist activities following the clash between university students and the security forces on November 27th when the students tried to commemorate the dead fighters of the former terrorist organization on its Heroes' Day (Mahaveer Day).
