100% 56 Up

All Critics (51) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (51) | Rotten (0)

What ultimately is so compelling about 56 Up is the universality of the experiences. We were all once children. And we all will die. And in between, there is everything else.

We feel good, refreshed and depressed in watching these people get older, also embarrassed in moments and cautioned about the passage of time.

Apted, himself now in his early 70s, says he hopes to continue the series further. Long may it live.

Watching "56 Up" gives you the wonderful feeling of seeing a sociological experiment blossom into something novelistically rich and humane.

Time has been neither kind nor cruel to the 13 men and women profiled in "56 UP." It has just been time, which is what this groundbreaking series is about.

We are all older now, and this series proves it in a most deeply moving way.

Those British kids are now 56

Watching the eighth film is intriguing but, in a way, disappointing. At this point in the game, it feels as if all the characters have determined their lots in life and are simply plodding through their interviews.

Quite simply one of the great documentary projects in the history of cinema, an engrossing sociological experiment on film; and though this mostly mellow installment isn't as revelatory as some earlier ones, it's still a remarkable document.

... feels like a retrospective and summation of the whole series, with ample quotation from the previous films, an approach that makes it interesting even for viewers who haven't seen the previous installments.

A completely unique and remarkable documentary project.

Apted skillfully weaves old footage with the new, and we become poignantly aware of another factor shaping their lives (and our own): biology, as the we watch the once-cute kids grow gray and heavy.

Perhaps the boldest and probably longest running sociological experiment on film.

I think the best thing about this movie (and the entire series) is that it forces the viewer to think about their own lives. It's kind of an awakening experience.

Once again, Apted assembles a captivating documentary that's profoundly educational, essential viewing to aid the understanding of the human experience.

"56 Up" is well worth seeing.

56 Up is still moving and philosophic, though not as exciting as earlier episodes, which had more drama.

The running time is over two hours, but the lives here are richly revealed and vastly rewarding.

Apted possesses the unsettling ability to shape perceptions of their lives and personalities from inside an editing suite, a fact that the members of his flock begin to recognize at varying points throughout their adult years.

LHC wraps up antimatter 'flip' story

Researchers at the Large Hadron Collider have witnessed particles called D-mesons flipping from matter into antimatter and back.

Antimatter is identical to matter, but with opposite electric charge.

Such "oscillations" are well known among three other particle types, but this is the first time D-mesons have been seen doing it in a single study.

The team behind the collider's LHCb detector have put their results on the Arxiv repository.

The manuscript will be published in Physical Review Letters.

In the complicated zoo of subatomic physics, particles routinely decay into other particles, or spontaneously change from a matter type to their antimatter counterparts.

This "oscillation" forms an important part of the theory that attempts to tame the zoo - the Standard Model.

Mesons are part of a large family of particles made up of the fundamental particles known as quarks.

This is a nice moment, it's a sort of completeness?

End Quote Chris Parkes University of Manchester

The protons and neutrons at the centres of the atoms of matter we know well are each made up of three such quarks.

Mesons, on the other hand, are made of just two - specifically one quark and one antimatter quark.

Theory holds that four members of the meson family can undergo the matter-antimatter oscillation - the matter and antimatter quarks both flip to their opposites.

Three particle types - K-mesons and two types of B-mesons had been caught in the act before.

LHCb has already been intimately involved in refining those prior measurements; in March 2012, the team confirmed earlier oscillation observations of a meson called Bs, and published the result in Physics Letters B.

On Tuesday, the team published results that set a new record of precision on the oscillations of the B0 meson, in the same journal.

Statistics of a 'discovery'

  • Particle physics has an accepted definition for a "discovery": a five-sigma level of certainty
  • The number of standard deviations, or sigmas, is a measure of how unlikely it is that an experimental result is simply down to chance, in the absence of a real effect
  • Similarly, tossing a coin and getting a number of heads in a row may just be chance, rather than a sign of a "loaded" coin
  • The "three sigma" level represents about the same likelihood of tossing nine heads in a row
  • Five sigma, on the other hand, would correspond to tossing more than 21 in a row
  • Unlikely results are more probable when several experiments are carried out at once - equivalent to several people flipping coins at the same time
  • With independent confirmation by other experiments, five-sigma findings become accepted discoveries

The new paper represents the last of the four mesons that had never been seen flipping from matter to antimatter and back in a single measurement.

Other experiments had seen some evidence of the D-meson's flipping, but this is the first that crosses the "five sigma" level of statistical significance that particle physicists use to denote an official discovery.

"This is a nice moment, it's a sort of completeness," said Chris Parkes of the University of Manchester, spokesman for the LHCb collaboration.

"There are four systems in nature that oscillate, and this is the last one where a single-channel measurement has crossed the five-sigma threshold - we know now about mixing in all four of these systems," he told BBC News.

But what remains open is the question of why the Universe we see is made overwhelmingly of matter rather than antimatter - they should both have been created in equal measure during the Big Bang.

Mesons measured by LHCb have already hinted at an answer, and Prof Parkes says that is the next target.

"The LHC has had a tremendous first three years of operation, and now as we enter the first shutdown... we look forward to probing in great detail the [D meson] system using the data we've got so far and data to come."

The Standard Model and the Higgs boson

? The Standard Model is the simplest set of ingredients - elementary particles - needed to make up the world we see in the heavens and in the laboratory

? Quarks combine together to make, for example, the proton and neutron - which make up the nuclei of atoms today - though more exotic combinations were around in the Universe's early days

? Leptons come in charged and uncharged versions. Electrons - the most familiar charged lepton - together with quarks make up all the matter we can see; the uncharged leptons are neutrinos, which rarely interact with matter

? The "force carriers" are particles whose movements are observed as familiar forces such as those behind electricity and light (electromagnetism) and radioactive decay (the weak nuclear force)

? The Higgs boson came about because although the Standard Model holds together neatly, nothing requires the particles to have mass; for a fuller theory, the Higgs - or something else - must fill in that gap

Here's Who Voted Against the Violence Against Women Act

Not everyone?in the House of Representatives wanted to pass the Senate's version of the bill to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act ? which the House succeeded in doing on Thursday afternoon. (The bill is now headed to President Obama,?who has promised to sign it.)

RELATED: Scott Brown's Decision Is Not Good for the GOP

After all, efforts to reauthorize the bill, which funds a bevy of programs designed to helps victims of violence, have languished for more than a year in the GOP-controlled House, whose members have either ignored or tinkered with Senate versions of the reauthorization bill, which provisions funding for the Act for the next five years. (Since expiring at the end of 2011, VAWA has survived on temporary funding.) It's a relief, certainly, but also an opportunity to recognize the Congressmen and -women who?still didn't want to reauthorize an important bill that has?always been reauthorized, without?controversy,?since being passed in 1994.

RELATED: What's Next for the Violence Against Women Act

A total of 138 House members voted against reauthorizing the intact bill, including nine GOP Congressmen ??Paul Broun, Scott Garrett, Louie Gohmert, Tim Huelskamp, Walter Jones, Steve King, Thomas Massie, Tom McClintock and Matt Salmon ? who vowed on Wednesday to strike down?any version of the bill ? even the heavily amended version their colleagues tried to push through (unsuccessfully) before considering, and passing, the Senate's bill.

Senate ends Hagel filibuster, moving defense pick toward confirmation

By Michael O'Brien, Political Reporter, NBC News

?

Former Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., moved a step closer to becoming the nation's next defense secretary after the Senate voted Tuesday to end debate on his nomination, and move toward a final confirmation vote.?

Hagel's nomination cleared a key threshold in a midday vote on Tuesday, ending a week-and-a-half-long delay forced by Republicans who object to their former colleague's nomination.?

The Senate voted 71 to 27 to move forward with Hagel's nomination, clearing the 60-vote threshold needed to end the GOP filibuster. Several Republicans who'd previously voted to block Hagel reversed their votes, and allowed him to move toward confirmation.

The vote all but ensures Hagel's confirmation, since only a simple majority of senators are needed in that vote, and Democrats ??who all backed the former Republican senator ??all support Hagel. That vote on final confirmation could come as soon as Tuesday evening.

Kevin Lamarque / Reuters

Former Senator Chuck Hagel testifies during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on his nomination to be Defense Secretary, on Capitol Hill in Washington, in this January 31, 2013, file photo.

Tuesday's vote brings the bruising fight over Hagel's nomination near to its conclusion.?

Republicans had fought strenuously to defeat Hagel, accusing him at points of harboring hostilities toward Israel, and sympathies for the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Tied into Hagel's nomination as well have been Republicans' long-running effort to ding President Barack Obama and his administration over their handling of the Sept. 11, 2012 attacks on a U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.?

"What has their filibuster gained my Republican colleagues?" Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., asked on the Senate floor. "Twelve days later, Senator Hagel's exemplary record of service to his country remains untarnished."

Reid added: "Senate Republicans have delayed for the better part of two weeks for one reason and one reason only: partisanship."

Hagel didn't necessarily help his cause during a combative confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee. Republicans aggressively questioned Hagel on a variety of matters during the Jan. 31 hearing.?

Even still, Democrats held firm in their backing for the former Nebraska senator, helping to move his nomination forward. Republicans, though, managed to buy themselves more time ? they said, to more fully investigate Hagel's background ??by waging a filibuster against the nomination on Feb. 14.?

Democrats angrily protested the delay, especially as current Defense Secretary Leon Panetta planned to leave the job, as dangerous and unprecedented. Republican opponents of Hagel, though, said at that time that they would drop their objections to holding a confirmation vote after last week's recess.

Copyright Alert System gets started, ISPs ready to lay the smack down on P2P piracy

DNP Copyright Alert System now up and running, ISPs ready to lay the smack down P2P piracy

The fight against online piracy just gained a new weapon in the form of the Copyright Alert System (CAS) aka the "six strikes" policy. Starting today, participating ISPs like Verizon, Time Warner Cable, AT&T and Comcast will begin issuing warnings to customers suspected of using illegal peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing services that violate copyright laws. Initial notifications will be used to educate and direct customers to legal alternative content sources. If the first set of notifications go avoided, the ISP may take further action, which includes: throttling internet connection speeds and redirecting users to websites requiring acknowledgment of CAS alerts.

If a person wishes to contest their ISP's findings, they will have 14 calendar days to request an independent review by the American Arbitration Association (AAA) for a fee of $35. If the investigation finds that no copyright violations have taken place, the alerts will be removed from the customer's account and they will receive a refund for the filing fee. However, should the organization's research rule otherwise, the internet service provider may proceed with taking action against its account holder. To get a closer look at the CAS and its inner workings, "redirect" your browser to the source links below.

Powers to offer Iran sanctions relief at nuclear talks

ALMATY (Reuters) - Major powers will offer Iran some sanctions relief during talks in Almaty, Kazakhstan, this week if Tehran agrees to curb its nuclear program, a U.S. official said on Monday.

But the Islamic Republic could face more economic pain if it fails to address international concerns about its atomic activities, the official said ahead of the February 26-27 meeting in the central Asian state, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"There will be continued sanctions enforcement ... there are other areas where pressure can be put," the official said, on the eve of the first round of negotiations between Iran and six world powers in eight months.

A spokesman for European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who leads the talks with Iran on behalf of the powers, said Tehran should understand that there was an "urgent need to make concrete and tangible progress" in Kazakhstan.

Both Russia and the United States stressed there was not an unlimited amount of time to resolve a dispute that has raised fears of a new war in the Middle East.

"The window for a diplomatic solution simply cannot by definition remain open forever. But it is open today. It is open now," U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told a news conference in London. "There is still time but there is only time if Iran makes the decision to come to the table and negotiate in good faith."

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said there was "no more time to waste", Interfax news agency quoted him as saying in Almaty.

The immediate priority for the powers - the United States, Russia, China, Germany, Britain and France - is to convince Iran to halt its higher-grade enrichment, which is a relatively short technical step away from potential atom bomb material.

Iran, which has taken steps over the last year to expand its uranium enrichment activities in defiance of international demands to scale it back, wants a relaxation of increasingly harsh sanctions hurting its lifeline oil exports.

Western officials say the Almaty meeting is unlikely to produce any major breakthrough, in part because Iran's presidential election in June may make it difficult for it to make significant concessions before then for domestic reasons.

But they say they hope that Iran will take their proposals seriously and engage in negotiations to try to find a diplomatic settlement.

"No one is expecting to walk out of here with a deal but ... confidence building measures are important," one senior Western official said.

The stakes are high: Israel, assumed to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed arsenal, has strongly hinted at possible military action to prevent its old foe from obtaining such arms. Iran has threatened to retaliate if attacked.

GOLD SANCTIONS RELIEF?

The U.S. official said the powers' updated offer to Iran - a modified version of one rejected by Iran in the unsuccessful talks last year - would take into account its recent nuclear advances but also take "some steps in the sanctions arena".

This would be aimed at addressing some of Iran's concerns, the official said, while making clear it would not meet Tehran's demand of an easing of all punitive steps against it.

"We think ... there will be some additional sanctions relief" in the powers' revised proposal," the official said, without giving details.

Western diplomats have told Reuters the six countries will offer to ease sanctions on trade in gold and precious metals if Iran closes its Fordow underground uranium enrichment plant.

Iran has indicated, however, that this will not be enough.

Tehran denies Western allegations it is seeking to develop the capability to make nuclear bombs, saying its program is entirely peaceful. It wants the powers to recognize what it sees as its right to refine uranium for peaceful purposes.

The U.S. official said the powers hoped that the Almaty meeting would lead to follow-up talks soon.

"We are ready to step up the pace of our meetings and our discussions," the official said, adding the United States would also be prepared to hold bilateral talks with Tehran if it was serious about it.

Ashton's spokesman, Michael Mann, said the updated offer to Iran was "balanced and a fair basis" for constructive talks.

Palestinians say detainee tortured before death

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Palestinian officials said on Sunday a Palestinian detainee who died in an Israeli prison was tortured before his death, but Israel said autopsy findings were preliminary and inconclusive.

The death of 30-year-old Arafat Jaradat in an Israeli jail on Saturday and a hunger strike by four inmates have flared tension across the occupied West Bank, where stone-throwing protesters clashed with Israeli soldiers on Sunday.

The Palestinian autopsy findings could further fuel unrest that has surged in the Palestinian Territories weeks before U.S. President Barack Obama is due to visit the region. Israel demanded the Palestinian Authority restore calm to the area.

Palestinian Minister of Prisoners Issa Qaraqea said Jaradat died as result of torture. The Palestinian Authority state pathologist was present at the autopsy on Jaradat's body, which was carried out in Israel.

"There were marks of torture on the back, marks of torture on the chest, a deep wound on the upper side of the shoulder, wounds alongside the spine and marks of torture underneath the skin," Qaraqea said, based on the Palestinian doctor's basic findings.

But Israel's Health Ministry said the injuries found in the autopsy could have been caused by the medical emergency team's efforts to resuscitate Jaradat.

It listed bruising on Jaradat's shoulder, chest and two elbows, as well as fractures in two of his right ribs.

"These initial findings are not enough to determine the cause of death," the Health Ministry said, adding that further test results were not yet in. An Israeli police spokesman said the investigation into Jaradat's death was still ongoing.

The Prisons Authority said on Saturday that Jaradat had not been on a hunger strike and had been examined by an Israeli doctor during an interrogation on Thursday.

Some 3,000 prisoners held a one-day fast on Sunday in protest of Jaradat's death, which Israel initially said was caused by a heart attack.

FUNDS

Israel demanded the Palestinian Authority stem the surge in protests but a senior aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas gave no indication the Authority, which exercises limited self-rule in the occupied West Bank, would issue any call for calm, and blamed Israel for the rise in unrest.

"Israel has conveyed to the Palestinian Authority an unequivocal demand to calm the territory," an Israeli government official said, adding the message was delivered by one of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's top aides.

As an apparent incentive to Palestinian leaders to intervene, Israel pledged to proceed with this month's transfer to the Authority of around $100 million in tax revenues that it collects on its behalf.

Israel began withholding the funds, money the Palestinian Authority badly needs to pay public sector salaries, after Abbas secured U.N. de facto recognition of Palestinian statehood in November.

In the latest clashes, hundreds of Palestinian protesters, in several towns and villages in the West Bank, hurled stones at Israeli soldiers, who responded with tear gas and stun grenades.

There were no reports of serious injuries in the confrontations, after a wave of violent protests last week in solidarity with the four hunger-striking prisoners.

Some 4,700 Palestinians are in Israeli jails, many of them convicted of anti-Israeli attacks and others detained without trial. Palestinians see them as heroes in a statehood struggle, and the death of any of the hunger-strikers would likely trigger widespread violence.

Prisoners affiliated with Hamas, the Islamist militant group that governs the Gaza Strip, issued a call for a new Palestinian uprising.

OBAMA AGENDA

Abbas said in an Israeli television interview three months ago he would not allow a third armed Intifada to break out and that Palestinians would pursue their cause peacefully.

Amos Gilad, a senior Israeli Defense Ministry official, questioned whether the protests were just a tactical move by the Palestinians to draw international attention before Obama's visit to Israel, the West Bank and Jordan.

But he added, in an Israel Radio interview: "Things can get out of control."

Netanyahu has said Iran's nuclear program would top the agenda of his meetings with Obama, but that the talks also would deal with Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts stalled since 2010.

Yasser Abed Rabbo, a senior Abbas aide, said Israel's treatment of prisoners and anti-Palestinian violence by Jewish settlers were "the cause of the deterioration".

The first Palestinian uprising began in 1987 and ended in 1993, when the Oslo interim peace accords were signed.

The second Intifada broke out in 2000 after the failure of talks on a final peace settlement. Over the following seven years, more than 1,000 Israelis died, half of them in suicide attacks mostly against civilians, and more than 4,500 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces.

Panama Canal project raises ire around East ports

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? Residents of this city's Ironbound neighborhood are familiar with big modes of transport. Jumbo jets fly so low while approaching Newark Airport that it seems one can hop onto a wing. Double-decker trains race through, ferrying passengers to New York City. Trucks rumble down narrow streets where the smell of Portuguese barbecue wafts through the air and Brazilian music emanates from stores and cars.

But some here and in neighborhoods near other East Coast ports are leery of the monster ships that will soon arrive because of a trade project thousands of miles away that they believe will harm their air quality, roadways and waterways.

"We can't afford any additional environmental burdens," said Joseph Della Fave, executive director of the Ironbound Community Corp.

East and Gulf coast ports are jockeying against one another, scrambling to accommodate so-called "post-Panamax" ships: massive vessels that can traverse an expanded Panama Canal. The $5.25 billion project is expected to be completed in 2015 and will nearly triple the size of ships that can travel the canal.

One of the most remarkable transformations is proposed not far from the Ironbound. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey wants to raise the Bayonne Bridge, a soaring steel arch span that connects Bayonne, N.J., with New York City's Staten Island borough, by 64 feet. The $1 billion project would allow post-Panamax ships to reach Port Newark and the Elizabeth Port Authority Marine Terminals in New Jersey and Howland Hook in New York. It was fast-tracked by President Barack Obama last year and is expected to be completed in 2016. Channels near the bridge will be deepened to 50 feet.

Residents in the Ironbound and on Staten Island worry that larger ships will bring more trucks and increased diesel pollution to poor communities that already shoulder heavy traffic loads. The Ironbound Community Corp. does an annual one-day count of trucks that pass through and idle in the heavily industrial neighborhood; in 2011 it counted 1,327 driving on neighborhood streets and highways and 41 idling. The Ironbound is also home to the state's largest incinerator and sewage treatment plant.

"It's going to be a lot of dust, a lot of dirt, a lot of vibrations with the raising of the bridge, and there's going to be a lot of truck traffic and rerouting of trucks," said Beryl Thurman, executive director of the North Shore Waterfront Conservancy on Staten Island. She can see the bridge from her home.

The Coast Guard issued a draft environmental assessment of the project last month and found it will have no significant environmental or health effects. The public has until March 5 to review the report and comment.

The Environmental Protection Agency rebuked the Coast Guard in written comments, saying it has "fundamental concerns" with the Coast Guard's findings and thinks a more robust examination must be done.

"We believe that an appropriate analysis would likely reveal changes in the distribution pattern of cargo which could reasonably be expected to result in environmental impacts, particularly air quality impacts associated with increased Port activity and associated diesel truck traffic," the EPA wrote in remarks submitted to the Coast Guard.

Hundreds of people packed one of three public hearings on the project on Feb. 13. Some, including trade union members and residents, said the project should get its final permitting because both the construction and cargo traffic would provide much-needed jobs to the area.

Unemployment in is at 14.7 percent in Newark and 11.8 percent in Bayonne, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It's 8.8 percent in New York City. The national unemployment rate is 7.9 percent.

Others worried about health issues and said the project must go forward only if efforts are made to reduce environmental effects.

"I have many concerns about unhealthy air quality at the port," said Nancy Mincey, an Ironbound resident whose 13-year-old son has severe asthma.

Eduardo Rivera, a truck driver, said that drivers idle in lines and that those classified as independent contractors can't afford to buy newer, more efficient trucks.

"The Port Authority should fix port trucking; then they can raise the bridge," he said at the hearing.

In a statement, the Port Authority said raising the roadway will "have tremendous economic and environmental benefits for communities throughout the Port District." The agency said it is "committed to clean air strategies ... and we will continue to work with our neighbors in the port district to ensure that our ports are healthy and economically viable moving forward."

Gary Kassof, bridge program manager for the First Coast Guard District, said the agency stands by its assessment and is taking resident concerns into account before deciding if the document will be finalized or if more study is needed.

"We haven't made any decisions," Kassof said. "We are here to listen and gather information over the next couple of months, and that's what we'll be doing."

The report says truck traffic will increase one to two trucks an hour by 2035, a change that will have a "negligible effect on air quality." It also says the bigger, newer ships are more fuel efficient and produce fewer emissions than smaller, older ones.

The Southern Environmental Law Center filed a federal lawsuit last year on behalf of environmental organizations over plans to deepen the shipping channel to the nation's fourth-busiest container port in Savannah, Ga. Dredging the Savannah River, which runs between Georgia and South Carolina, would result in toxic cadmium being deposited on South Carolina shores and threaten wildlife.

"The Bayonne Bridge is the flip side of the Savannah deepening," with one in the air and the other underwater, said Blan Holman, a managing attorney in the center's Charleston, S.C., office.

The National Center for Healthy Housing is studying the effects of truck traffic and an intermodal rail facility from the Port of Baltimore, which plans to greatly increase commerce once the canal is widened.

"The main thing in terms of health that we're focusing on is looking at the impacts of truck traffic on local roads," said Ruth Lindberg, a program manager at the center.

In Miami, the Tropical Audubon Society last year settled a lawsuit against the Army Corps of Engineers that claimed dredging the port would significantly damage Biscayne Bay and harm wildlife.

Residents and environmental groups in Charleston, S.C., aren't as worried about cargo vessels as cruise ships. They're currently battling over the environmental and aesthetic impact of increased cruise ship traffic and worry a wider canal could bring even larger ships.

Some on the West Coast, whose ports handle most U.S. imports from Asia, are concerned their ports will hemorrhage cargo and jobs because of the expanded canal. A "Beat the Canal" campaign in California is trying to push projects that would "enhance the competitiveness of our green ports and corridors," according to its website.

Back in New York, Thurman and others said they want the Coast Guard to fully assess the impact to the communities surrounding the bridge and ports.

"I don't understand what they're thinking," Thurman said, "except that they don't live here and if something goes horribly wrong, they're not going to be scrambling to get the hell out of the way."

Custom Timer Jobs of Copying List Items to Database using Entity Framework

In this article we can try creating a custom Timer Job in SharePoint.? The tools we are going to use are following:

?? Visual Studio 2010
?? SharePoint DevTools from CodePlex

We can start with analysing what is a Timer Job.

What is a Timer Job?

A Timer Job is a periodically executed task inside the SharePoint Server.? It allows us by providing a task execution environment.

For example we can execute tasks like: Sending Emails on every hour, Data Updating on every day, creation of reports on every week etc.

Default Timer Jobs inside SharePoint

There are many Timer Jobs inside SharePoint which do the internal tasks like:
?? Sending emails
?? Validating sites
?? Delete unused sites
?? Health analysis
?? Product versioning
?? Diagnostics
These tasks will be having execution periods like:
1.? Minute
2.? Hour
3.? Day
4.? Week
5.? Month

Manage Timer Jobs

You can see the Timer Jobs from Central Administration > Monitoring > Manager Timer Jobs

Following is the list of some Timer Job Definitions:

You can select each Job Definition and change the schedule or disable it.

Creating a Custom Timer Job Definition

Now we are ready with the basics to proceed with creating a Custom Timer Job.

Scenario

We have a list named Products which is custom template.? Any new product arriving has to be posted to an SQL Server database so that the company website can show it to potential customers.

So the activities involved are the following:

1.? Create Products List inside SharePoint
2.? Create Product Table inside Database
3.? Create the Timer Job Definition
4.? Create Event Receiver
5.? Create the Database Insert Method
6.? Deploy the Timer Job
7.? View the Results

Step 1: Create Products List inside SharePoint

Here is the List Definition: (the list template with data is attached with the article)

You can see that the core columns of the list are:

Column
Description
Title
The name of the Product
Description
About the Product
Price
The price of the Product

The HasPosted column determines whether the item is copied to the Products database.?

After installing the list from template you will can see it is having 2 items:

Step 2: Create Product Table inside Database

Now we need to create the destination database and table.? Following is the table definition.? (the table sql is attached with the article)

Step 3: Create the Timer Job

In this step we can go ahead and create the Timer Job.? For this you require Visual Studio 2010 and the SharePoint templates installed.

Open Visual Studio and create a new Empty SharePoint Project as shown below:

In the next page select your server and use Deploy as Farm solution option:

Click the Finish button after entering the options.

Now add a new class and derive it from SPJobDefinition as shown below.

using System;
 using System.Collections.Generic;
 using System.Linq;
 using System.Text;
 using Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration;

 namespace SPTimerJobExample
 {
     public class ProductsJobDefinition : SPJobDefinition
     {
     }
 }

Now replace the above file with the following content.

using System;
 using System.Collections.Generic;
 using System.Linq;
 using System.Text;
 using Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration;
 using Microsoft.SharePoint;

 namespace SPTimerJobExample
 {
     public class ProductsTimerJob : SPJobDefinition
     {
         public ProductsTimerJob()
             : base()
         {

         }

         public ProductsTimerJob(string jobName, SPService service, SPServer server, SPJobLockType lockType)
             : base(jobName, service, server, lockType)
         {
             this.Title = "Products Timer Job";
         }

         public ProductsTimerJob(string jobName, SPWebApplication webapp)
             : base(jobName, webapp, null, SPJobLockType.ContentDatabase)
         {
             this.Title = "Products Timer Job";
         }

         public override void Execute(Guid targetInstanceId)
         {
             SPWebApplication webapp = this.Parent as SPWebApplication;
             SPContentDatabase contentDb = webapp.ContentDatabases[targetInstanceId];

             SPList list = contentDb.Sites[0].RootWeb.Lists["Products"];

             CopyItems(list);
         }

         private void CopyItems(SPList list)
         {
             foreach (SPListItem item in list.Items)
             {
                 bool hasPosted = (bool)item["HasPosted"];

                 if (!hasPosted)
                 {
                     new DbManager().Insert(item);

                     item["HasPosted"] = true;
                     item.Update();
                 }
             }
         }
     }
 }

The above code is performing the following activities:

1.? Get the list of items from Products where HasPosted is false
2.? Insert the Product into Database
3.? Mark the item HasPosted to true

We need to include the DbManager class file and will be done in the upcoming step.

Step 4: Create Event Receiver

Now we have to create an event receiver which performs the installation or uninstallation of the Job Definiton.

In the Solution Explorer right click on Feature and use the Add Feature item.

In the appearing dialog change the title to Products Job Definition and the Scope to Site

Now right click on the Solution Explorer > Feature 1 and click Add Event Receiver

Inside the class content of Feature1.EventReceiver.cs place the following code.

??

 const string JobName = "Products Timer Job";

         public override void FeatureActivated(SPFeatureReceiverProperties properties)
         {
             SPSite site = properties.Feature.Parent as SPSite;

             DeleteJob(site); // Delete Job if already Exists

             CreateJob(site); // Create new Job
         }

         private static void DeleteJob(SPSite site)
         {
             foreach (SPJobDefinition job in site.WebApplication.JobDefinitions)
                if (job.Name == JobName)
                     job.Delete();
         }

         private static void CreateJob(SPSite site)
         {
             ProductsTimerJob job = new ProductsTimerJob(JobName, site.WebApplication);

             SPMinuteSchedule schedule = new SPMinuteSchedule();
             schedule.BeginSecond = 0;
             schedule.EndSecond = 5;
             schedule.Interval = 5;

             job.Schedule = schedule;
             job.Update();
         }

         public override void FeatureDeactivating(SPFeatureReceiverProperties properties)
         {
             DeleteJob(properties.Feature.Parent as SPSite); // Delete the Job
         }

You need to add the using as well:

using Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration;

Step 5: Create the Database Insert Method

In this step we can complete the DbManager class file.? Here we are using Entity Framework associated with .Net 3.5 version.

For this add a new Entity Data Model into the project and map to the Product table which we have created in previous step.

Now create a class file named DbManage.cs and replace it with the following content.

using System;

 namespace SPTimerJobExample
 {
     public class DbManager
     {
         public void Insert(Microsoft.SharePoint.SPListItem item)
         {
             using (ProductionModel context = new ProductionModel(GetConnectionString()))
             {
                 Product product = new Product();
                 product.Title = item["Title"].ToString();
                 product.Description = item["Description"].ToString();
                 product.Url = item["Url"].ToString();
                 product.Price = (double)item["Price"];
                 product.PostedOn = DateTime.Today;

                 context.AddToProducts(product);

                 context.SaveChanges();
             }
         }

         public string GetConnectionString()
         {
             string connectionString = new System.Data.EntityClient.EntityConnectionStringBuilder
             {
                 Metadata = "res://*",
                 Provider = "System.Data.SqlClient",
                 ProviderConnectionString = new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnectionStringBuilder
                 {
                     InitialCatalog = "YOUR-DB-NAME-HERE",
                     DataSource = @"YOUR-SERVER-NAME-HERE",
                     IntegratedSecurity = false,
                     UserID = "YOUR-USER-ID-HERE",
                     Password = "YOUR-PASSWORD-HERE",
                 }.ConnectionString
             }.ConnectionString;

             return connectionString;
         }
     }
 }

The above code contains the Insert() method to insert new record into the Product table.

For the time being I am hard coding the connection string.? You need to specify the correct user credentials in the GetConnectionString() method.

Note: Please note that the connection string is loaded from the executing application's configuration file.? In the case of Timer Jobs the configuration file will be OWSTIMER.exe.config residing in the 14hive folder.

Step 6: Deploy the Timer Job

Now we are ready to deploy the Timer Job into the SharePoint Site.? For this right click on the solution and click the Deploy option.

If you get the Deploy Succeeded message we are good.

Step 7: View the Results

Now we can go to the Central Administration to see our Timer Job.? For this open Central Administration web site and go to Monitoring > Review Job Definitions

On clicking the Review Job Definitions link you can see our item as shown below:

Click on the item and in the appearing page click the button Run Now

You can see that the Timer Job is set for 5 Minutes according to our code.

Now we can go back to the Products list and see that the HasPosted is set to True.

Going to the SQL Server Table we can see both the records are inserted there.

?

Troubleshooting Tips

While developing timer jobs, you might need to delete the assembly and feature as well.? Please note the following points for troubleshooting guidance:

?? Features are deployed to the 14hive folder
?? The assembly gets deployed to GAC folder
?? You can use RETRACT option from? Visual Studio
?? You can use GACUTIL to uninstall the assembly
?? You can remove the Feature from 14hive folder

For troubleshooting the Farm Solutions or User Solutions you can use:

?? Central Administration > System Settings > Manage Farm Solutions
?? Central Administration > System Settings > Manage User Solutions

You can Retract or undo the last Retract schedule there.

For checking the Job Status or History you can use:

?? Central Administration > Monitoring >? Check Job Status > Timer Job Status
?? Central Administration > Monitoring >? Check Job Status >? Timer Job History

These screens will show the Success / Failure status of the jobs and any errors associated.? For example an invalid connection string problem is identified as shown below:

Debugging Tips

In some cases the Timer Service hold the old version of assembly.? So the new changes you have done through Visual Studio may not get reflect immediately.? You can change the assembly version and view the GAC to ensure the correct version was deployed.

Plus you can restart the SharePoint 2010 Timer Service from services.msc

Note: In the case of Integrated Security as True in connection strings, the authenticated user would be the Service Account user assigned in the service.

Turn a Flashlight into a Long-Lasting Mobile Device Charger

Turn a Flashlight into a Long-Lasting Mobile Device ChargerBruce Mueller was looking for a way to charge his phone for a couple of weeks while off the grid. So he combined the Mintyboost from Adafruit (designed for two AA batteries and usually tucked into an Altoid tin ) and combined it with his D-battery Maglite, for higher capacity charging.

With a little tinkering of your own, you could create your own flashlight-Mintyboost. Bruce writes:

Removing the bulb and reflector, I created a space to hold the mintyboost board. By disassembling (breaking) a bulb, power can be drawn from the bulb socket.

I sliced it in Makerware, medium quality (.27 layers, 2 shells, 0% infill). It sticks to the plate like glue ? take your time and a nice spudger to get it off...

He also offers the 3D plans for the Mintyboost-holding bracket.

Insert Coin semifinalist Hodu is a 'zero failure' physical therapy hardware software combo

Hodu borrows its name from the Korean word for "walnut," a reference to the culture's use of the nut as an exercise tool in traditional medicine. The barbell-shaped device is a "zero failure" physical therapy tool, aimed at rewarding patients for even the slightest level of feedback. There are on-board pressure sensors and accelerometers for detecting activity and a series of colored LEDs that light up based on feedback levels. The team behind Hodu is also working on proprietary software to help log patients' squeezing and rotational progress.

After the break is a video that should give you a bit of a better idea of precisely what Hodu is capable of.

Pink stripe on NC illegal immigrant licenses eyed

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? A new North Carolina driver's license set to be issued to some illegal immigrants has a bright pink stripe and the bold words "NO LAWFUL STATUS," raising concerns about whether the design will brand those who show it.

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles announced last week they would begin issuing the licenses March 25 following a lengthy legal review. The Obama administration's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program grants valid federal work permits to qualified applicants brought to the U.S. as children without legal authorization.

Some Republican lawmakers in the state have balked at the idea, filing a bill Thursday to bar the DMV from granting the licenses until at least June.

Cinthia Marroquin, a 22-year-old Raleigh resident awaiting approval for a DACA permit, said the longer the license issue is delayed, the longer it will take for her to get a job and drive herself to work. Even if she is able to get one, she is worried about presenting a license declaring she has "NO LAWFUL STATUS" at a police roadblock or while writing a check at the grocery store.

"A lot of us are just scared," said Marroquin, who came to the U.S. from Mexico when she was 15. "We just want to be able to get a job and drive to work. Having that license is just going to show everybody you're here illegally, just buying a beer or writing a check. You don't know how people might react."

The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina also takes issue with the designation.

"North Carolina should not be making it harder for aspiring citizens to integrate and contribute to our communities by branding them with a second-class driver's license," said ACLU attorney Raul Pinto. "There is simply no reason for officials to stigmatize people who are in the U.S. legally with an unnecessary marker that could lead to harassment, confusion, and racial profiling."

Almost from the moment President Barack Obama announced the program in June, states across the country grappled with how and whether to issue driver's licenses to those granted legal presence.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has said it is up to officials in each state to make their own determination about what to do. Many states, such as Oregon and Georgia, have announced that they will grant driving privileges to those eligible.

In Arizona, where Republican Gov. Jan Brewer has pledged that DACA youths will not get driver's licenses, the state's DMV still lists federal work permits among the documents making people eligible for one.

The issue is especially politically charged in North Carolina, where current state law ordains a driver's license will be issued to anyone who holds valid federal documentation of their "legal presence" in the United States.

The office of the state's Democratic attorney general in an opinion last month said that under federal law, DACA participants have a "legal presence," even if they do not have "lawful status." Therefore, state law requires that DACA participants be granted licenses. Republican Gov. Pat McCrory's administration agreed, announcing last week the DMV would begin issuing the licenses.

That has upset many conservatives in McCrory's own party, including Rep. Mark Brody (R-Union). He is one of four freshmen legislators who introduced a bill Thursday to bar DMV from issuing licenses to DACA participants before June 15, potentially giving time to craft a permanent change to state law.

Brody said he believes strongly that the DACA program violated the U.S. Constitution because it was implemented without congressional approval. Obama said last year he was forced to take executive action by the decades-long failure of Congress to consider meaningful immigration reform.

"We need a time out," said Brody, a construction contractor. "We don't need to have the federal government dictating to us how we are supposed to issue licenses in this state. We do it, and that's a privilege we have under our Constitution."

Among the concerns raised by Brody and other bill sponsors is that illegal immigrants might use their new licenses to access social programs or register to vote, despite the bright pink markings. An extensive 2011 review of the state's 6.4 million registered voters by the N.C. Board of Elections found 12 instances were a non-citizen successfully cast a ballot.

Jose Rico, a 23-year-old Raleigh resident from Mexico who has already been issued DACA work permit, said he plans to be in line at the DMV on March 25 to get a license, even if it's pink. He will be extremely disappointed if state legislators pass a bill delaying or a denying his ability to do so.

"I don't know what's wrong with these people, why they're so afraid of people like me," said Rico, who has lived in the U.S. since he was 13. "It's so frustrating. I passed a federal background check, done everything right by the book. I'm paying taxes. I mean, we're just kids trying to go to school."

How US military plans to carry out Obama's 'pivot to Asia'

A US policy shift toward Asia means a greater role for the Navy. Even pre-'pivot to Asia,' it already stationed half its ships in the region, and it is developing a new 'afloat forward staging base' in the Pacific.

The Pentagon's No. 2 official, Ashton Carter, picked a telling time to discuss the US military's plans for its new strategic focus on the Asia-Pacific.

At Europe's premier security conference in Munich, Germany, this month, Mr. Carter took the opportunity to reassure concerned NATO allies, among others, that America's focus on Asia would not mean its abandonment of Europe.?Some US partners have been concerned that even the phrase "pivot to Asia" implies that the United States would be turning its back on Europe.

"Asia has no NATO, has not had a NATO, has had no way of knitting together countries and healing the wounds of the Second World War," he said, making the case for the shift.?"Europe is a source of security and not a consumer of security in today's world, fortunately," Carter said. While Asia has prospered for 70 years, "it's not automatic," he added. "And I think a central reason for that peace and prosperity has been the pivotal role of American military power in that part of the world."

It's a role that is slated to grow in the near term (even if John Kerry raised some questions during his Senate hearing to become secretary of State). Indeed, the US military is aiming both to strengthen relationships with rising economic partners in the region and to increasingly act as a counter to rivals for power ? most notably, China.

As outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has said, the Pentagon's strategic shift is being driven by a recognition that America's security in the 21st century "will be linked to the security and prosperity of Asia more than any other region on earth."

The shift has implications for the services, too, particularly as America's decade-long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan come to an end. The Army and Marine Corps have been the go-to branches during this time. Now it is the Navy to which the Pentagon will be increasingly turning.

Currently, half of the Navy's ships are stationed in the Asia-Pacific region. This helps the US build relationships in the region, as well as reassure allies, says Adm. Jonathan Greenert, chief of naval operations.

Even as the threat of defense cuts loomed, resulting in calls to decrease the size of the Navy's aircraft-carrier fleet from 11 to 10, Secretary Panetta pushed back, citing the need for a Navy "able to penetrate enemy defenses."

The Pentagon is also putting money into developing a new "afloat forward staging base" in the Pacific, which can be used for everything from counter-piracy to mine clearing to Special Operations Forces missions.

Perhaps most public is the move of 250 US Marines to Darwin, Australia, last April, with the promise of as many as 2,500 at any given time in the years to come. Also, some 85,000 US troops are currently stationed in South Korea and Japan.

President Obama called the new troop deployment to Australia "necessary to maintain the security architecture of the region." Further, he added, "This will allow us to be able to respond in a more timely fashion" and "to meet the demands of a lot of partners in the region."
